Areca Palm Care
The Areca palm is one of the easiest palms to grow. Chrysalidocarpus lutescens grows very fast and adaptable to different environments. It grows best in well-drained fertile soils, however, the plant can tolerate acidic, clay, sand and alkaline soils.
It is adaptable to full sun or light shade. Too much of sunlight can burn the leaves. Bright indirect light places are perfect for this tropical clumping plant.
The Areca Palm requires regular water. It will thrive in moist soil, but not saggy. Root rot is a common problem for Dypsis Lutescens, be very careful about overwatering. It prefers abundant water during the growing season and little in winter. Misting is important to keep the leaves of the palm green and healthy.
It is moderate salt tolerant and drought-resistant.
The Areca Palm enjoys warm temperatures and is very cold sensitive. It can tolerate short spells of cold down to 20 degrees, but can be severely damaged. Young plants will be more likely killed by severe freeze and most adults will recover over time.
This exotic bushy plant has high nutritional requirements. Potassium deficiency is a common disorder of the Areca plant. It requires fertilization once or twice during the growing season.
This tropical plant requires little pruning. It tends to form very dense clumps and thinning out the excess stems can help to create a very attractive specimen.
