Areca Palm Diseases
Ganoderma Bud Rot is a common disease of the Areca Palm. There is no treatment, only prevention.
The first typical symptoms of the disease include wilting, drooping and brown discoloration of old fronds. Ganoderma Bud Rot causes death of the bud of the palm. Overwatering aggravates the disease activity. When the plant is infected, it has the fungul conk (the the fruiting bodies) on the lower part of the trunk. Infected palms should be removed and destroyed as soon as possible. Because the disease lives in soil, the infected Areca palm should not be replaced with another tree or plant.
The best way to prevent Ganoderma is prevent wounds to palms and avoid injuring the plants during pruning and planting.
The Areca Palm is also sensitive to spider mites and Pink rot.
